FVSU institutes a hoverboard ban in residence halls

Special to the Peachite Jan. 15, 2016 - Fort Valley State University has banned electronic skateboards, self-balancing boards and scooters from all residence halls amid concerns that the "hover boards" pose a safety hazard. Several consumers have reported that the devices' lithium-ion batteries have ignited and set ablaze while recharging, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is conducting an investigation regarding the safety of these devices. Because of the potential fire hazard, several airlines, including Atlanta-based Delta Airlines, have banned the toy from their flights. Fort Valley State University's ban of the hoverboards was made effective the Spring 2016 semester. FVSU's Director of Housing and Residential Life Shawn Modena said although the devices are not prohibited from other areas on campus, the ban of the devices inside residence halls will remain in place until adequate safety measures are established for the devices. "The batteries in these devices can burst into flames, especially while being charged, and while not in use," Modena said in a statement. "This can result in a metal fire that can burn with an intense heat. Several safety and consumer agencies are investigating numerous fires and injuries related to these devices. We are not willing to risk the safety of students, or the safety of the university community." Modena said once safety policies for the devices are developed by relevant state and federal agencies, the university may reconsider the decision to ban the item from residence halls.
