Spoken Will

Spoken Will
By Cherika Brice

Fort Valley, Georgia- Students were brimming and overflowing with excitement on November 11, 2015, a night that poetry rocked the house. It was 7pm and the room was filled with faces that cheered, and anxiously waited to hear the voices of the young poets of Fort Valley State University. Campus Activity Board and our freshman class united together to present to students a stage ridden with confusion, rebirth, inspiration, talent, and pride.

Our host and hostesses, Naron Usry, Paula Marshal and Idalis Forte, blessed the stage with their vibrant personalities and began the poetry slam with everyone standing; providing a moment of silence in remembrance of our fellow wildcat Crishea Cummings, whom passed on November, 10, 2015. Many poets that night had shocked us with their brilliance. Some spoke of heartbreak, failure and pain while others tackled issues of racism, and self-identity. Rahkym Thomas, a junior English major, moved the crowd with his inspirational words, and demanded his fellow classmates to wake up and take a stand in society. The words poured out with emotion and house-rocking force. The night ended with a dynamic mix of poetry, drama and music.
